EPCC Math Professor Named Distinguished Teacher
Fan Chen, El Paso Community College (EPCC) Associate Professor of Mathematics, was awarded the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Southwestern Section's 2021 Distinguished Teacher.
Originally educated and trained as a mechanical engineer, Chen changed her profession to education to help students learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills through mathematics. Her biggest dream is to change the mentality and the way that teachers engage students in mathematics.
“Fan Chen is an outstandingly talented math professor who always places her students first. She uses the latest technologies and tools to ensure her students are engaged and active which has been a critical component of education during the pandemic,” Steve Smith, EPCC Vice President of Instruction and Workforce Education said. “Her service to both her students and to the El Paso community exemplifies the best of what EPCC has to offer.”
Fan Chen has taught at EPCC for over 12 years and has also taught at the University of Texas at El Paso and in many K-12 classrooms. The dedication to education is evident in the classroom and the community through her numerous projects and programs. Fan volunteers with other local organizations and even formed a group of volunteers from various institutions to 3D print face masks, face shields, and ear savers during the pandemic.
The Mathematical Association of America is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts. They further the understanding of our world through mathematics because mathematics drives society and shapes our lives. The mission of the MAA is to advance the understanding of mathematics and its impact on our world.
