The Border Art Residency is accepting applications for its summer artist
residency, which runs June 1–August 1, 2021. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 23, 2021. The selected artist will be notified on May 7, 2021.
The artist-in-residence is provided a fully furnished living and work space, a $600 monthly stipend, and paid utilities, except phone and internet. The living space is an 11’ x 16’ studio apartment. The residency begins no later than June 1, 2021. Smoking and pets are not allowed in the space.
Through a newly formed partnership with Artstream, a transformative learning program supported by the El Paso Community Foundation, visiting border artists will be able to share their art and thinking process, and stimulate dialogue with learners in the El Paso area.
Artstream collaborates with artists and participating schools or cultural organizations. It will help the residency artist connect to the El Paso community by sharing how they see, hear, and feel our experiences with empathy, criticality, and nuance. Artstream has worked with the El Paso Museum of Art, UTEP’s Centennial Museum and Chihuahuan Desert Gardens, Rio Bosque Wetlands Park, elementary schools, and well as the federal prison system.
The Border Art Residency, an affiliate of the El Paso Community Foundation, began in 1999 by founders Becky Hendrick and Willie Ray Parish. Previous resident artists include Cathy Lee Crane (2018), Fausto Fernandez (2015), Chika Matsuda (2012), Alice Leora Briggs (2009), and Carlos Gutierrez (2000).
A panel of nationally recognized artists and arts professionals will select the next Border Art Resident artist. Applications must include a resume, statement of purpose/expectations for the residency, 10 jpeg images (300 DPI) of their work, the artist’s name, address, phone number and email address, plus the names, addresses and phone numbers of two references.
Application forms are available at borderartresidency.com/apply-1. Applications must be emailed to theborderartresidency@gmail.com
The application fee is $40, which may be made by mail to Border Art Residency, El Paso Community Foundation, P.O. Box 272, El Paso TX, 79943-0272, or by clicking the Donate button on borderartresidency.com.
