EPCC Cross Country teams shine at Lori Fitzgerald

Both the EPCC men and women finished in second place at the Lori Fitzgerald Memorial Cross Country Meet last Friday at the Chamizal National Memorial.


The Tejanos were led by Gideon Cheplak, who finished second individually with a time of 19:38. The Tejanas were led by 2nd place finisher, Everlyn Kemboi with a time of 16:52 and 3rd place finalist, Francisca Jebor at 16:59.

The El Paso Community College’s student Everlyn Kemboi (650) 

finished in second place individually at the Lori Fitzgerald Cross Country Invitational.



The UTEP men and women won the team competitions. The Miner men finished with 38 points, narrowly beating out EPCC, which finished with 39.


The other team results had the New Mexico State Aggies finishing third with 66 points; Western New Mexico was fourth with 81 points and Sul Ross State’s 160 points placed them in fifth place.


UTEP’s women fished with 35 points, EPCC had 46, New Mexico State finished with 54, Western New Mexico had 77 and Sul Ross State had 150.



The EPCC men’s and women’s teams were the only community college squads competing in the Lori Fitzgerald Invite.

Joining Cheplak for the EPCC men in the 6.4K race were Dennis Kiptoo, who finished third with a time of 20:15.09, Elias Loriposia (8th, 20:44.00), David Ceballos (21st, 21:50.03), Eduardo Gallegos (22nd, 21:52.09), Matthew Lindsay (26th, 22:27.05) and Donald Hodgson (35th, 24:26.04).


For the Tejanas, other finishers after Kemboi and Jebor in the 4.7K competition were Faith Jemutai (6th, 17:16.06), Jayleen Guerrero (16th, 19:18.01), Lillian Breceda (19th, 20:03.07), Lauren Villareal (20th, 20:11.08) and Allison Kendrick (21st, 20:18.01).


The EPCC runners will next compete in the Saints Collegiate Cross Country Invitational this Saturday morning in San Antonio, hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University.


Other schools scheduled to run are Our Lady of the Lake, Wayland Baptist, Trinity, Texas Wesleyan, Texas College, Texas A&M International, Texas A&M Kingsville, Sul Ross State, Saint Thomas, Southwestern, Schreiner, McMurray and North Central Texas College. 


Both EPCC’s men and women cross country teams are the reigning National Champions of the National Junior College Athletic Association’s (NJCAA) Half Marathon competition.
