The Food Pantry at El Paso Community College continues its mission of helping out students in need of food.
The application process is simple and can be done online. Along with this students can request certain foods on the application if they have a certain preference or diet.
Along with food students can request items for personal hygiene if the pantry has them available.
The pantry still accepts student donations and are collected at all Campus Life offices.
[The Food Pantry] is set up for EPCC students going through a hard time and need help obtaining food” said Marlib Gonzalez, the Associate Director for Campus Life.
The Food Pantry was started in April 2017 by the Student Government Association. It continues to have the same goal of helping out students with food. Along with food, the Pantry can also provide personal hygiene items (soap, toothpaste, etc) if needed.
According to the Student Government Association page on the EPCC website, “[The Tejano Food Pantry] strive to contribute to an environment of growth and encouragement by supporting our students in the pursuit of higher education and a healthier lifestyle”.
“There is an application process students have to do. They have to be a current student and from there they fill out an application with all their details and that’s how we determine how much they need and if they’re eligible” said Gonzalez.
Students can apply at any Campus Life office on all campuses.
Applications are also available online under the Student Government Association section on the El Paso Community College website. Applications are processed in one to five business days according to the welcome letter before the application.
Gonzalez adds that students can also request certain foods on the application if the student has allergies or a specialized diet. However, students who qualify for help from the Pantry are limited to two times every semester.
According to the welcome letter, the Pantry distributes food weekly at room C102 or C107 at the Valle Verde campus.
The dates and times are discussed personally when the student turns in the application. A student ID is required whenever a student uses the Pantry.
“It’s students helping students,” said Gonzalez “We do take donations and students can bring it here at campus life or drop it off at the Food Pantry”. The pantry accepts donations all year around.
According to the Student Government Association page, the Pantry accepts all forms of food except opened items(boxes, bottles, cans, or bags), any items that can spoil or go bad, or expired items.
