The Nun fails to conjure scares

 *Spoiler Alert*

Director Corin Hardy’s “The Nun” makes its way into the conjuring universe.

After a nun in a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her life, the Vatican in Rome sends a priest who has a haunted past by an exorcism gone wrong (played by Demian Bichir) and a novitiate (played by Taissa Farmiga) who has yet to takes her final vows (where we later find out she is Lorraine Warren from the “Conjuring” movies) to investigate the suicide.

Taissa Farmiga as "Sister Irene" in "The Nun", the newest addition of The Conjuring universe.

A French-Canadian (played by Jonas Bloquet) who has been living Romania joins them on their investigation of the castle.

Together they uncover the orders unholy secrets. There they don’t only risk their own lives but also their faith and souls when having to face the force of the demonic nun.

Right away the movie introduces “The Nun”, who we later find out isn’t actually a nun but a demon named Valak who has possessed the body of a deceased nun.

The moviemakers used quite a bit of CGI in postproduction and trust me you can tell. Now don’t get me wrong I’m all for using CGI to make aliens and mystical creatures look real but personally I think that using a really good makeup artist would have sufficed in this case.

If you’re a fan of extreme horror movies and getting so scared you’re jittering the next day, then The Nun isn’t for you.

Yes it does have a few jump scares that can catch you off guard, which are always fun, but it isn’t one that leaves you frightened.

I kept waiting for that one scene that would have my heart beating out of my chest, waiting to see what’s going to pop out and scare the bejesus out of me, but it never came. Its story line was easy to follow and doesn’t lose you mid-movie, which makes it a little less boring at times.

Personally I’m a fan of movies that keep you interested all the way through and this movie just didn’t do that for me.

There are some upsides to this movie, one would be the fact that they always seem to loop their movies together, which gives you more insight as to where the moviemakers are attempting to take this franchise.

I can already see another “decent” movie making its way into The Conjuring universe and I truly hope that they bring out one that will haunt your dreams for days, because personally those are my favorite.

Overall this was in my opinion an okay horror movie. I give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars. There are a few things that I’ve critiqued that I believe they could have done better.
