The EPCC men’s cross country team, led by Gideon Cheplak, won the Lori Fitzgerald Open in Las Cruces on Sept. 15.
The Tejanos defeated UTEP, New Mexico State and Western New Mexico in the 7K race.
EPCC finished with 40 points and was followed by Western New Mexico (56), NMSU (57) and UTEP (60).

Cheplak won the individual competition by posting a time of 21:55.10. UTEP’s Rodgers Korir came in second with a time of 22:00.41.
Rounding out the scoring for the Tejanos were Michael Kirwa, who finished 5th with a time of 22:21.66, Dennis Kiptoo (6th, 22:26.89), Elvis Chelak (14th, 23:36.87, Elias Loriposia (19th, 24:07.51, David Ceballos (26th, 24:46.24), Pedro Guerra III (28th, 24:58.29), Donald Hodgson (32nd, 25:47.01) and Alan Savochka (38th, 27:44.15).
The EPCC women’s team finished in second place, behind the UTEP Miners.
The UTEP women won the 5K event with 38 points. EPCC followed with 59 points.
The University of New Mexico was third with 62 points, NMSU was fourth with 64 and Western New Mexico was fifth with 136.
UTEP’s Winny Koech won the individual crown with a time of 17:16.58.
Pacing the Tejanas was Everlyn Kemboi and Faith Jemutai, who finished 5th and 6th respectively.Kemboi finished with a time of 18:01.44, while Jemutai was just behind at 18:03.05.
The other EPCC women finishers were Francisca Jebor, who finished 10th with a time of 18:17.76.Feliciana Kiptoo (17th, 18:48.86), Dorothy Jemutai (36th, 20:29.28), Amy Vidal (39th, 21:08.43), Samantha Martinez (42nd, 21:30.69) and Sol Saenz Arreola (47th, 23:10.90).
