Victory for EPCC cross country team at Cowboy Jamboree

The EPCC cross country squad traveled to Stillwater, Oklahoma for the 2016 Cowboy Jamboree and returned victorious in both men’s and women’s competition.

The women’s squad came in first place with a score of 57 and an average time of 19:26.4 in the 5K race, beating Oklahoma Baptist who came in second with a score of 85 and an average time of 19:41.8. Oklahoma City came in third place with score of 87 and a recorded average time of 19:30.9.


For the women, Rose Jebet was the top finisher for EPCC with an overall and cumulative place of third and a recorded time of 18:52.5. 


Second was Shalet Mitei whose time was 19:01.6 and a cumulative place of 10th and an overall place of seventh. 


Kelli Kirkpatrick was the third best finisher with a recorded time of 19:23.3 and a cumulative place of 21st and an overall place of 11th.


The EPCC men’s squad placed fifth with a score of 146 and a recorded average time of 28:02.7 in the 8K race. 
Elias Villegas-Ponce was the top finisher with a recorded time of 27:41.9 and a cumulative and overall place of 16th. 


Second was Michael Flores whose recorded time was 27:45.3 and had a cumulative place of 35th and an overall place of 19th. 


Rounding out the top three was Sammy Rono who recorded a time of 27:48.0 and a cumulative place of 57th and an overall place of 22nd.


“Both teams ran well and we hope to continue to be fiercely competitive throughout the remainder of the season”, said coach Felix Hinojosa. 


Over 20 schools, including EPCC, participated in the event with close to 170 students in both men’s and women’s competition making it an impressive accomplishment for EPCC to place in the top five teams at the Cowboy Jamboree. 


This was Oklahoma State University’s 80th annual Cowboy Jamboree and according to their website it is the oldest cross country race in the country dating back to 1937.
