Student Resource Fair is a win-win event

EPCC hosted its annual “Student Resource Fair” at the Valle Verde Cafeteria Annex on Sept. 21. The event was held from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

El Paso Communty College clubs and organizations provide information to students at the annual Student Resource Fair

 

 

 

 

“Sometimes we do it twice a year, if there are a lot of new registrations,” said Campus Life Administrative Office Assistant Darcy Traffansted. 


According to Traffansted, the Resource Fair is used to help students become aware of the services that the college provides.


“We want the students to know where to get the proper help and we want them to have a fulfilled college experience,” said Traffansted.


The event consisted of many different booths that students were able to visit to obtain information about the college services. 


The booth attendants were composed of advisors, work-studies, and counselors. 


The booth attendants provided different reasons of what they hoped to accomplish with the help of the fair.


“The primary purpose is to get out more information, especially for first time students,” said the Academic Resource Manager of the Math Center, Olga Thurman. 


Thurman’s booth provided information about the services that the Math Center provides, such as one-on-one tutoring for all levels of math.

“I am hoping to accomplish exposure with the help of the fair,” said Vocational Nursing Instructor Andria Arreola. 


“In our field, we have a need.his fair is a great opportunity for students who are trying to figure out what they want to do,” Arreola went on to say.

At Valle Verde library Letty Adame, acquisitions technical assistant, also expressed what the library hoped to accomplish through the fair.


“We are hoping to promote all the services that the library provides,” said Adame. “Students think that we just have books.

 

The library provides re-sources for students such as, online article databases and online.


The booths also provided the benefits of joining EPCC clubs.

 

“We provide internships at the Diversity Program in room B-235 and B-243 where students learn basic office work,” said Cesar Benal, who works with the  Diversity Program.


 Acquisitions Technical Assistant with the Valle Verde Library, Letty Adame, also expressed what the library hoped to accomplish through the fair.

According to Benal, the Diversity Program is in charge of posting the flyers for the Hispanic Heritage Month, which hosts events from Sept. 16 – Oct. 14. The Diversity Program can be found at the Valle Verde campus. 


The Resource Service Fair also provided information of some of the degrees and certificates that EPCC offers. 


According to the Fire Technology Instructor Angel Bustamante, the EPCC’s Fire Technology department offers a variety of degrees.

 

Degrees include an Associate of Arts in Fire Science, Fire Management or Basic Fire Fighter.


Other booths at the resource fair included, but were not limited to: Academic Computing Services, Center for Students with Disabilities, Counseling, Registration, Culinary Arts, Student Leadership and Campus Life, Financial Aid, New Student Orientation.
