El Paso Community College has held several events for its annual Black History Month observance during February.
The highlights of the EPCC Black History Month activities are held Monday nights’.
All events are free and open to the public.
“Please join us for all the upcoming Black History Activities,” Director of Diversity Programs, Olga C. Chavez said. “We hope to see you there! The Black History Committee has made these events happen.”
Remembering and honoring our past, will be held on Monday, the 29 of Feb.
This will have the college take part in the 27th Annual African-American Read-In Day in celebration of the written word.
The event will be held in the EPCC ASC Auditorium, Building A (9050 Viscount) at 7 p.m.
“A special guest, Nolan Richardson will join us on February 29,” Chavez said. “This is in addition to our other speaking and educational events that remain excellent opportunities to engage students outside of the classroom.” Said Richardson, “Last year many events filled to capacity, thus we request that all guests arrive to the venue early for all events.”
Throughout the month of Feb., there have been several events celebrating Black History Month.
Jazz Night was held on Feb. 22 with Billy Townes, an accomplished pianist, producer and songwriter hosting the event.
Townes has been shaping the musical landscape of the Southwest for over fifteen years. He has earned a reputation for melding fearsome chops with nuanced arrangements and technological skill.
Music, dance and dramatic interpretations of contributions Africans-Americans have made for the world were also featured.
Students, faculty and community members will also read their favorite selections of prose and poetry by famous African American writers.
The following campuses will offer readings:
Feb. 24 at the Rio Grande Little Temple, 906 N. El Paso, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.,
Feb. 26 at the Transmountain Outside Theater, 9570 Gateway North, 11a.m.-1 p.m.
