EPCC Tejanas place second in the nation

The EPCC Women’s Half Marathon Team taking 2nd place is the National Half Marathon competition. (L) Mercy Rotich, Kayla Pallares, Emily Estrada, Kelli Kirkpatrick and Demaris Jepkorir.


The EPCC woman’s cross country team finished 2nd in the nation at Levelland, Texas on Nov. 21 for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Half Marathon Championships.


This is the 4th time in 13 years the Tejanas finish 2nd.


The women were paced by Kayla Pallares who finished 2nd with a time of 1:20:34 and teammate Kelli Kirkpatrick who finished 4th at 1:27:25. 


Both women earned NJCAA Half Marathon All-American honors. 


Kayla and Kelli became the 11th and 12th Half Marathon Women All Americans for EPCC. 


Damaris Jepkorir finished 17th with a time of 1:34:15 for 14 points.


The women scored 20 points, but fell short when Gillette College from Wyoming scored 18 points.


The EPCC men finished 6th with 48 points. South Plans College won the men’s event with 14th points. 


The first two Tejanos to cross the finish line were Eli Kosgei in 11th place at 1:11:08 and Juan Vazquez in 12th place at 1:11:12.


During  13 years at the NJCAA Half Marathon, the EPCC women have had three National Championships, four 2nd place finishes and three 3rd place finishes.
