Both EPCC cross country teams hitting their stride

There’s nothing like peaking at the right time and though the Region V Championships are still about a month away (Oct. 31), the EPCC cross country teams appear to be hitting their stride when it counts.

EPCC cross country will be participating in the 2nd Annual Embry-Riddle Invitational on Oct. 3 in Prescott, AZ.


The Tejanos and Tejanas dominated the field at the New Mexico JC Invitational in Hobbs, N.M. last Saturday.

The men’s team recorded a perfect score of 15 points and placed the first six runners in a row.

Eli Kosgei, who finished second overall, led the way with a time of 25:09 in the 5K race.  
The overall winner was an unattached runner who didn’t count in the team scoring.  

EPCC’s Juan Vazquez finished third at 26:10, Daniel Gonzalez finished fourth at 26:46, Richard Zuniga was fifth at 26:51.58, Elias Villegas-Ponce finished sixth at 27:05.37 and John Sandoval was seventh with a time of 27:40.30.

In the team scoring, Dine finished second to EPCC with 64 points, Odessa was third with 81 and USW finished fourth with 84.

On the women’s side, in a very close finish the EPCC women edged out New Mexico JC 40 to 42; the others schools were South Plains, which finished third with 67 points; Dine was fourth with 77 points and Odessa finished fifth with 109.

Kayla Pallares paced the Tejanas by finishing in second place in the 5K race at 18:55.  
NMJC’s Rose Jebet won the individual competition with a time of 18:49.  
The next two EPCC finishers were Mercy Rotich, who finished sixth at 20:43 and Kelli Kirkpatrick, a seventh place finisher at 20:49.

Up next for EPCC is the 2nd Annual Embry-Riddle Invitational in Prescott, AZ on Oct. 3.  

Other schools participating in the event are:  Arizona Christian, Benedictine University at Mesa and Embry-Riddle Arizona (all NAIA) and Estrella Mountain Community College (NJCAA).
