Board member of 17 years Dr. John E. Uxer, Sr. announced his resignation at the Board of Trustees meeting on June 24, leaving an immediate vacancy for District 1 to fill.
News of Uxer’s retirement generates strong sentiments as El Paso Community College conducts a special appointment process to fill his seat in representing El Paso’s westside and Upper Valley area, most commonly known as District 1.
“In my nine years on the board, Dr. Uxer has been a mentor, a gentleman and a modest individual,” Art Fierro, chair of the El Paso Community College Board of Trustees, said.
“His friendship and his leadership will be dearly missed, and we wish him the best in enjoying his retirement.”

After 17 years as a Board of Trustees member representing District 1, Dr. John Uxer announced his resignation on June 24.
Whether inside or outside the board room, Uxer’s absence of presence will be felt by all who know him.
“He will be sorely missed,” Pamela Payne, executive assistant of the president and Board of Trustees, said. “He’s an outstanding individual, one that’s really student success oriented.”
With Uxer agreeing to stay on until the representative vacancy is filled, the race to find an enthusiastic, open-minded, applicant over 18 years of age with a minimum of six months living in the
district is of the utmost importance.
“There’s seven individuals that sit on your Board that are challenged with setting policy, setting tuition rates, and setting tax rates and with one person missing, you have an entire district with their voice not being heard,” Fierro said.
Applicants are required to submit a letter of interest, resume, application for special appointment as well as a supplemental application for appointment to the Board of Trustees in order to be considered for the vacating position.
“Change is always exciting, it always brings opportunity for refocus and growth,” Fierro said. “I’m hoping that the new applicant is open mind and has student success as their goals.”
Application information can be found at the college district’s website, www.epcc.edu or can be picked up at the President’s office located at the ASC building, 9050 Vista Count Blvd., Suite A131.
All applications must be submitted in the president’s office no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, July 13.
For more information on the application process, contact Pamela Payne at (915) 831-6511 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
