When Oscar Verdeja, father of EPCC cheerleader Marilu Rodriguez, decided to buy a raffle ticket from his daughter, he was not expecting to win the grand prize.
On June 15, however, the drawing for the EPCC athletic department’s fundraiser to help raise money for its scholarship program as well as fund for equipment, facility improvements and travel expenses took place.

EPCC fundraiser winner Oscar Verdeja will travel to San Diego in September.
Verdeja’s name was drawn, making him the winner of a three day, two night trip for two to San Diego with airfare, hotel fees and food allowances covered and two tickets to a San Diego Padres game.
“I actually thought that I was just helping my daughter with the money and being able to help out the school, but I did not think I would actually win the trip to San Diego,” he said.
Verdeja gets to choose when he wants to go on the trip.
“I am a [Arizona] Diamondbacks fan, so I plan to go and take the trip by September, which will be the month where the Padres will be playing the Diamondbacks,” Verdeja said.
As to who gets to accompany him on the trip, Verdeja already decided.
“I plan to take my wife, Lourdes,” he said. “She is not much of a sports person, but she was very excited when she found out I had won the raffle.”
Surprised at the victory, Omar Verdeja, Oscar’s son, said he did not expect his dad to win.
“My dad just bought one ticket, I just saw the ticket as a way for us to help the college, but for him to win a free trip, we did not see it coming,” Omar said. “I think it is really cool for him and my mom to go and being able to spend a weekend together.”
Oscar Verdeja said he has never won anything before, so winning the raffle is very exciting.
“My advice to people if they ever participate in a raffle is to give it a chance,” he said. “You don’t know if you will be lucky and win.”
