El Paso Community College’s Culinary Arts department is operating restaurant THIRTEEN09 once again for everyone to enjoy.
Culinary students are presenting tasteful entrees forthe fifth opening starting on Feb. 17 and running through March 24.
“A lot of times you will see many creations that are on the menu that the students have created themselves,” said Chef Daniel Guerra, Coordinator of the Culinary Arts Department.
Guerra said he is excited to see what the students can deliver to their guests and the potential they have to prepare a great entrée.
The students are able to show off what they are learning in their classes by creating courses that are based on technique and precision.
“It is more restaurant themed, whereas in the classroom it is a lot more slow paced where they [students] can actually pick up the techniques that we are putting down for them,” said Guerra.
“When they come over here, they can reinforce those techniques in a more realistic setting, which works out really well for them to get a little insight before they set out into the industry.”
Culinary students are experiencing the different techniques taught with classroom basics.
By working at THIRTEEN09 they challenge what they know to form creations of their own and for the puplic to enjoy.
Guerra continues to explain the benefit that the students are receiving when participating and expanding their opportunities to grow from the program and to take ownership.
Elegant entrees will be presented for friends and family to enjoy and they will see the fine definitions each plate has to portray.
“You are going to see smoked sirloin on the menu, where the students will cook the sirloin and then they will cook it to order after it has been smoked,” said Guerra.
“Stuffed Chicken Breast” and “Smoked New York Strip Steak” are two of the many entrees customers can choose from.
“We try to get our students involved with small events and work their way into the events like our opening night coming up on the seventeenth,” said Guerra.
