Longtime EPCC physics and astronomy professor Emil Jaroslav Michal, Jr. passed away on Thursday, Oct. 16 at the age of 66.

“He was respected by his colleagues in both EPCC and UTEP,” said Paula R. Mitchell, EPCC Health Career & Technical Education, Math & Science and Rio Grande campus dean.

“Emil was very student-centered.

He wanted the best for his students at all times.

He was kind and understanding and a very good teacher and he’s going to be greatly missed by everyone.”

The cause of his death was not released at the time the newspaper was printed.

Michal was born and raised in Houston, Texas.

He received his Bachelor of Sciences from Texas A&M University and a Master of Sciences from UTEP.

He taught physics and Astronomy at EPCC for 37 years and was still a professor at the Rio Grande campus.

Mitchell said that Michal was teaching four different physics courses and another physics professor at Rio Grande, Donald L. Butzz, will finish the classes this semester for him.

Arranges haven’t been made for Spring 2015 classes that were scheduled to be taught by Michal, but new instructors are planned to be assigned to cover them.

Visitation and vigil service were held yesterday, Oct. 21, at Sunset Funeral Home.

The rite of Christian burial will be today, Oct 22, at 10:30 a.m. in St. Patrick Cathedral.

Interment will follow at Evergreen East Cemetery.

Mitchell said that apart from the funeral services, nothing is in plans yet to honor him at the college.
