The annual Buddy Walk funds scholarships for students with disablities.
El Paso Community College Diversity Programs will be presenting its fifth annual Buddy Walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday Oct. 4. Registration will start at 9:00 a.m.
The event will be held at the Americana Language Village on the Valle Verde campus, located at 919 Hunter.
“The Buddy Walk is important in more ways than one, this is the only scholarship generated by EPCC for students with disabilities,” said Jim Heiney, EPCC marketing specialist.
The Buddy Walk raises funds for EPCC scholarships for students with disabilities, the Down Syndrome Association of El Paso (DSAEP) and the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS).
“This event raises money for EPCC students with Down syndrome,” Heiney said.
“In our first four years we have issued over 20 scholarships.”
The price for the walk is $20 the day of the event and will cost $15 in advance.
Advance tickets are available at all EPCC campus cashiers and the DSAEP.
All participants that pay will be given an EPCC Buddy Walk t-shirt.
The walk will include a three-quarter of a mile walk that circles around the Valle Verde campus.
For the partakers of the walk there will be refreshments for sale, door prizes. The entertainment will include local jazz talents, Billy Townes and Ruben Gutierrez.
“We hope all participants have a good time,” Heiney said. “We are there for community support and everyone enjoying the beautiful day.
“We invite everyone from the community to come and be more aware of Down syndrome.”
October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and the EPCC Buddy Walk is only one of 300 walks nationally in the United States.
Down syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that occurs once in every 733 births in the country.
